CLARITY || Traveling can be disorienting. Being in an unfamiliar place taxes our brains as we get our bearings. When we were in London this summer, a simple thing like crossing the street took more mental energy because the traffic flow is different. The “look left-right-left” instructions that have been ingrained in me since childhood suddenly didn’t serve when the cars are driving on the opposite side of the road.
Thankfully, many of the London crosswalks near our hotel included visual cues to take the pressure off and help us be safe. A bold “LOOK RIGHT →” painted on the pavement made it easy to step forward with confidence (after looking right, of course).
More than once I thought, “I wish the cues were so obvious in other parts of life!”
It’s not just travel that can be disorienting. Some seasons of life feel that way too.
Maybe it’s a season of transition and you are learning new rhythms and realities.
Maybe it’s a busy season and the volume of details you are managing challenges even your high-capacity to manage details.
Maybe you’ve experienced a loss or you or someone in your life is navigating a personal challenge that layers emotional or even spiritual load on top of mental load.
In these times our brains can swirl with details and options and potential next steps leaving us feeling tired or overwhelmed and longing for clarity.
The beauty of the “LOOK RIGHT →” cue is that it invites us to pause, to look around, to be attentive to what could potentially harm us as well as the clear path opening before us.
In life, God’s Spirit invites us to do the same–to slow down, to look inward and all around, to be attentive to what is life-giving and what is potentially draining so that we can step forward with greater confidence and clarity.
