I wish I knew who created this graphic that was circulating on social media. If you know, please tell me so I can give credit where credit is due.

It’s time for another edition of celebrating what we’re getting right. This week I’m celebrating the way I embraced and executed the concept of pivot. ⁣

⁣Last Monday was Miss T’s birthday. I had a vision and a plan and dreams of getting things prepared early for a change. Then a few things happened that threw all of that off course:⁣

  • ⁣When I went to order the rainbow layer cake Miss T wanted, I found out the bakery doesn’t make that cake anymore. I tried other places but didn’t have enough lead time.⁣

  • The treats Miss T wanted to take to school were sold out.⁣

  • I missed my window of opportunity to pick up certain supplies on Saturday. Since most stores were closed Sunday for Easter, it threw off my carefully orchestrated time table for getting everything done that “needed” to get done on Monday, Miss T’s birthday.⁣

⁣There was a point late Saturday afternoon where I felt out of time and out of options and a full-fledged case of mom guilt coming on strong. So, what did I do right? I pivoted.⁣

⁣Here’s what that looked like for me:⁣

  • ⁣I released the picture I had in my head of what T’s birthday “should” look like. I asked, “What CAN I do at this point to make T’s birthday feel special?”⁣

  • I called Andrew and said “I feel like a sh*tty mom because of....I need to talk through options with you for how we can do this differently.” I named what I was feeling and remembered I had a partner in figuring it out. ⁣

  • I had a conversation with Miss T to manage her expectations and ask her opinion.⁣

  • We remembered that the most important thing for T was celebrating with other people, so we arranged an impromptu outdoor birthday party and invited neighbors to stop over. @nadiacakes push up rainbow cake pops and cupcakes for the win!⁣

  • Instead of creating a balloon arch from a kit, I went to the party store and got a couple super cool helium balloons. ⁣

  • We extended the birthday celebration by a few days and had her special dinner on Tuesday and the requested pie on Wednesday.⁣

⁣All in all it was a good birthday. Thanks pivot!⁣

How have you pivoted recently? What did you get right in your pivot? ⁣
